However, if you become short of breath or wheezy before your appointment, please proceed to take your respiratory medications and phone us as soon as possible as we may need to postpone your test. If you are unsure about which medications to withhold, please contact us on (08) 8287 2040.

If you are only having your tests done, you can leave your films at home. However, if you are having a consultation with one of our Respiratory Physicians, please bring the scans with you.  Please call our staff on (08) 8287 2040 if you are not sure.

Each test is different.  Before starting most tests your height and weight will be measured. We will also ask some questions about your smoking history. A Respiratory Technician will explain, demonstrate and guide you through each test in a simple and easy to understand manner.

Most Lung Function Tests (Spirometry, Diffusing Capacity, Static Lung Volumes, Hypertonic Saline Challenge, Mannitol Challenge) will involve performing a series of breathing patterns through the mouth, into a machine. Each test will be repeated a few times to ensure accurate results.

During the 6 Minute Walk Test, your blood oxygen saturation and heart rate will be monitored while resting, then whilst walking at your own pace, and again after walking.  Your blood pressure will also be taken.

A Rhinomanometry test measures airflow and pressure when breathing through the nose.  If the flow measured is below a certain threshold, a nasal decongestant spray will be administered and the test will be repeated.

The most important thing you can do on the day of your test is to remain calm and relaxed. We will help you achieve the best results possible.

It is advised that you arrive approximately 5-10 minutes before your appointment to complete some paperwork.

You will need to obtain a referral from your doctor before you have the test, which you will need to bring to your appointment. You also need to bring your valid Medicare card, plus any concession cards (pension, health care card, DVA) on the day of your test.

A fee estimate will be provided at the time of booking. All accounts are payable in full on the day. Pensioner and health care card concession holders are bulk billed when referred for Lung Function Testing only (ie. this policy does not include consults). We accept cash, EFTPOS, Visa, MasterCard and DVA Gold Card.

A Medicare rebate applies to all tests except for testing associated with employment or recreational medicals. GST is additionally charged for all pre-employment or recreational tests.

Private health insurance does NOT cover lung function testing.

Your results will be reviewed and reported on by a Respiratory Physician. A copy of your results should be forwarded to your referring doctor within 24 hours of the test.

If possible, urgent studies can be reported on the same day. Please inform staff at time of booking.

Please note our consulting physicians may not be onsite and present every day and consultations are by appointments only. If you require emergency help, please call an ambulance or head to your nearest emergency department to seek the help you need.
